The Dweghom

The Dweghom are the firstborn children of War and their long history is steeped in warfare and loss. Originally crafted by the dragons as a race of peerless craftsmen, their Ancestors were forged to be the ultimate servitors; hardy, industrious, loyal and dedicated to the creation of beauty. Their lifespans were vastly extended and their memories made deep and enduring, so that the secrets of their craft would not be lost from generation to generation. For millennia, they labored for their masters and the Dragons thrived. Matchless artifacts and beautiful relics swelled the Dragon hoards, while the Rooks, the dragons’ lairs, were transformed into marvels of architecture and engineering.

Revolts and uprisings were all but unknown, as loyalty had been imprinted into their very essence and they found it impossible to raise weapons against their masters, once one of them joined the fray directly.

Those few rebellions that did occur were swiftly put down, their leaders rounded up and executed, while the followers were exiled to the unforgiving depths of their vast mine networks to toil in the dark and dangerous passages close to Destruction’s heart. But the dragons had wrought their craft too well. Those Ancestors who were exiled to the depths were bowed, but far from broken. Their gift of memory stoked the fires of their fury, fueling their determination to bring down their masters. Their tunnels delved ever deeper into the hidden places of the earth, the cool stillness of those dark chambers echoing with their anger as they dug, the quiet slowly giving way to the seething wrath of the planet’s core. There, surrounded by a fury and rage that dwarfed even their own, they came across their doom, as well as their salvation. Bound by the Dragons in Primordial Earth and Fire since Eӓ itself was still young, it had languished in the smothering embrace of his chthonian tomb for eons uncounted, beyond the reach of the mortal races; or so the Dragons thought. Every rage fueled strike of the Ancestors’ pickaxes and every angry, shattering blow of their hammers had become a prayer, turning their ordeal into a pilgrimage that burrowed through not only the miles of obdurate stone that separated them, but across the very borders of reality itself, until they stood before the throne and prison of War, the Second Horseman and Incarnate Soul of Destruction.

All Dweghom are taught this memory, Dheureghodh, the Breaking, by their Mnemancers. It was then that the very race and fate of the Dweghom were altered forever, finding the means of their freedom in War’s prison and War itself. Physically changed by their sojourn and efforts in War’s prison, their bodies swelled with the gifts of Primal Fire and Earth. They became tremendously resistant to fire, heat and its effects also needing far less food and rest that their physiology would otherwise dictate. A remarkably large percentage of the Dweghom population also displays the Gift. Gifted Dweghom are characterized by tremendous potency, but very little control. Some of them see this as a byproduct of the manner in which they came into these powers; a poisoned gift from a capricious master. A Dweghom who does not master them is doomed to be consumed by them.

Their return from War’s prison heralded the end of countless millennia of peace. Gone was the time of short-lived rebellions. This conflict would not be a rebellion, a battle of subjects against their master, but a true War, a contest of equals. Wielding the power and will to shake the very foundations of the world, the Dweghom looked at their creators in the eyes and took the fight to the Dragon Rooks, plunging the whole world into chaos and flame. When the ashes of that conflict finally cooled, only the Dweghom were left standing. Driven by their own unreasoning and bitter pride, they had quenched their fury in the blood of their makers… and their ancestors. Of the Dragon Rooks and their loyal slave population only cinders remained.

Alas, War’s teachings resent peace and Memory does not bring unity. In the centuries after the Dragons were eradicated and their slave population destroyed, the Dweghom lost their focus. Sickened by their belligerence, the High King and his family abdicated their leadership. Alone and without a purpose to guide them, the Dweghom called upon their Mnemancers to lay their deeds before them and build their new society. They looked upon their past, their future and each other and promptly disagreed.

The Memory Wars that ensued have never truly ended. Divided by castes, clans and beliefs, the Dweghom walked perilously close to extinction. Only their very survival as a race compelled them to withdraw to their Holds. The scars of this conflict run deep and to this day their civilization is a shattered mosaic of conflict.

Split between the fanatical Ardent, the gifted Tempered and the civilian populous, Dweghom society is riven through and through. Violent confrontations between members of these factions are a common sight, where long standing feuds can spark isolated incidents into full-fledged internecine warfare at a moment’s notice. Leadership within each hold rests on a tenuous distribution of responsibilities and power between these three castes, established and held only through a delicate balance of violence, compromise and efficiency, under the supervision and guidance of the Mnemancers. One of the only things the leadership can agree on is that internal conflicts can be set aside in the face of an exterior enemy; as a result, most Dweghom hosts are in a state of perpetual conflict and ever ready to bring War to any brave, or foolish, enough to give them cause.

Crucible of Wills, The Stone Face Campaign is a new and limited run Boxed Set for Conquest, pitting the forces of Eric Shurr and his Hundred Kingdom forces against those of the Steelshaper and the Dweghom. When a Dweghom sorcerer achieves such mastery over his power that he can control both primordial affinities, he is capable of ascending to a higher understanding of the powers he commands. This much is understood by all who walk the path of the Sorcerer, and is the source of the raw power that Magma Sorcerers can command. The mistake they make is in believing that mixing these primordial elements is anything like melding them.

Only a small fraction of Sorcerers ever attain this level of mastery over the Elements, with most simply stopping upon achieving mastery over Magma. The comfortable lie one might chose to believe in is that most Sorcerers simply lack the touch of genius needed to achieve such complete control. The most perceptive amongst those who speak to these Master Sorcerers might see the real reason hiding behind their gruff demeanors and overwhelming Elemental power: fear. These eldest and most accomplished of Sorcerers are amongst the few living creatures that regularly interact with the Steelshapers.

They are also among the few who can see past the awe they inspire and truly grasp the changes this final transformation brings. On the surface, it becomes impossible to tell where their armor begins and where their flesh ends. Their voices echo hollow and their eyes stare expressionless. They clearly possess a terrifying genius and an unparalleled mental capacity, which they fixate relentlessly on problems about one of their alien interests or an experimental project, to which they ceaselessly devote themselves. Their power itself is entirely alien, different in both invocation and effect from the raw elemental might they wove before. Still, it is none of those things that bring fear to the elder Sorcerers. It is not even the sheer, daunting weight of responsibility that hangs from Steelshaper shoulders, as almost all the functions within a Dweghom Hold and all the works of the Temple Forge depend on their unique and brilliant innovations, a weight they seem to bare seamlessly with borderline indifference. It is simply that the Elders fear these beings are no longer Dweghom.

While none argue with their effectiveness on the battlefield, few can understand the sorceries they bring to bear. Those who can grasp the faintest edges of the power a Steelshaper possesses would be rightfully puzzled by the notion that an army containing one might be defeated or even challenged, for their control over metal is total. This is the direct result of the labors of their Tempered ancestors who sought to master and control the raging forces of War’s Prison. What these Ancestors could not foresee, however, was the lack of control over these powers that the Dweghom display. Their control is so limited, in fact, and their power so great, that gifted Dweghom are doomed to die, consumed by their own gift.

Knowing this, it comes as little surprise that at the heart of a Tempered Sorcerer’s quest for power, one will ultimately always find the pursuit of control. This is what the Tempered believe they surrendered that fateful day they broke War’s prison: control of their power, control of themselves, control of their future. And it is all of these things that they struggle to regain. The Tempered hierarchy places very little value on raw power, but rather focuses on control. It comes as little surprise that almost invariably the leaders of the Tempered Forges are Steel Shapers, for, by the Tempered, they are considered to be the pinnacle of the Dweghom race, as well as its salvation.

Below them are those Sorcerers who have managed to balance their Elemental powers but are still in the process of combining them, the Magmancers. Below even them, stand the Sorcerers, who are still struggling to control their gifts, the Geomancers and Pyromancers. Dweghom who discover they are Gifted, very quickly come to the attention of their superiors and are turned over to the Tempered to learn to control their Gift. There they are presented with a stark choice: embrace the path of sorcery and learn to control your power or die.

Given that these are Dweghom, a surprising number of candidates still chose the second path, preferring to undergo the Descent rather than surrender the gift their ancestors fought to grant them. Those that choose the path of the Sorcerer have chosen a long and arduous path. The first step in it is the fitting of the techno-sorcerous grafts, created by the Steel Shapers to grant the Sorcerers some basic control over their power. Little more than sorcerous venting mechanisms, the clever technical minds of the Tempered have found countless uses for them on the battlefield: from powering the powerful suits the Flameforged and Stoneforged guards use, to charging the powerful Hellbringer cannons as they lumber to war. Only the youngest and least trained Sorcerers are risked in this manner. As they develop finer control, they are taken off the front lines and into the forges.

This is where the majority of Tempered Sorcerers hone their talent: from the raw elemental puissance needed to operate the heaviest of the elemental forges to the subtle sorcerous control required to reach the precise temperature needed for the miraculous alloys that make the Dweghom unparalleled metal workers. All but the very rarest of candidates possess a greater affinity to one element than to the other. They start their path to mastery on the element they are weakest at, learning to control it first. Countless decades are spent using less and less of their power with greater and greater control until at long last they can claim to have mastered their first element.

Once this control is achieved a Sorcerer seeks to accomplish the same task with the second element. This is a longer and more dangerous path, where the lessons learned in controlling the relatively tame power of their secondary element gives the prospective Sorcerer some hope of controlling the raging maelstrom of power that is his primary Element. Those Master Pyromancers and Geomancers, who have managed to tame their primary element, are ready for the next step in their advancement. With their fine control of both elements, they are required to combine them and manifest their mastery of the para-element of Magma. Even with both elements under control, this is often the most dangerous step in a Sorcerer’s path to power and control, with a sizable percentage failing to control the burgeoning power of Magma.

Should a Sorcerer attempt this without having achieved mastery over both elements the results are almost always fatal. Yet, after all this time, effort and achievement, only now does the last stage of a Sorcerer’s path to ascension begin. Much like all other cases of dealing with primordial energies, the combination of two forces results in the creation of more power than the sum of their parts and the control needed becomes exponentially greater.

As mastery is slowly achieved, the Sorcerer is able to refine his source of power, moving away from the raw elemental might of earth and fire into true mastery of a new Element: metal.

Box Contents:

1 Resin Miniature

1 Base

1 Command Card Product Information

Assembly: Required.

Box size: 7.4x10.4x3.7cm

Material: Resin

Scale: 38mm, Miniature Height: 4.4cm

Box Contents
● 3 Resin Tactical Retinue Miniatures
● 3 Infantry Plastic Bases Product Information
● Assembly: Required.
● Box size: 12x12x6cm; 410grs
● Material: Resin
● Scale: 38mm, Miniature Height: 4.7cm
These retinue characters act as tactical advisers to the following characters - Ardent Kerawagh, Tempered Sorcerer, Hold Raegh making them more effective generals.

In Game Role

● Battlefield Role: Restricted Brute
● Class: Medium
● Type: Brute

Lore:

Some Dweghom manifest so much of their Elemental Gift, they must master it or be consumed by it. To rise to the position of Raegh, a Dweghom must reach a value of Aghm determined by the Mnemancers of each hold (considering the population, productivity, history and achievements of the Hold in question) while surpassing all others. In a society as militarized as the Dweghom, there is only one path that can lead to such heights: the craft of war. In the early stages of his prospective career, an aspiring candidate earns his Aghm directly: feats of arms and valor at the trials, and later the field of battle.
Rising through the ranks in the military machine of a Dweghom Hold is a very difficult process, riven with physical danger on the battlefield and traps and pitfalls in the advancement as an officer, for, the higher one seeks to rise, the lower he may fall. For this reason, many Dweghom warriors, who have earned the right to command soldiers, chose to forgo the honor and potential advancement, content instead to remain a part of the rank and file.
This simple stage eliminates those who lack the drive, ambition and courage to pursue the path of leadership. Once a commander, a Dweghom continues to accrue Aghm through personal skill and valor, but also through the performance of his troops, both on the field of battle and during the interminable drills and patrols that mark the daily routine of a Dweghom Hold. The higher one rises, the greater the proportion of his Aghm is dependent on the performance of his troops, encouraging Dweghom leaders to pay close attention to the individuals under their command, weeding out the inept, lazy and just plain unlucky as it has a direct impact on themselves and their future career.
This is the most dangerous stage in the advancement of a Dweghom’s career, not just because he must relentlessly push his troops and himself to excellence, but because he must continuously defend what he has already accrued from challengers. Only those of equal or higher rank may challenge an officer, meaning from the moment he enters the field, an ambitious officer must endure not only the dangers of the battlefield but also the relentless challenges from his equals or betters who seek to thin the herd or cull the competition before it can rise to threaten them, often from their own troops.
There are many holds, therefore, in which no single Dweghom can rise to the rank of Raegh. Trapped by the pitfalls of the system, the most worthy candidates ruthlessly crush aspiring contenders at the expense of advancing themselves, fearful of losing the labor of a lifetime. This leaves the Hold leaderless, devolving power down to a triumvirate composed of the highest ranking Mnemancer, the leader of the Ardent and the Forge Lord of the Tempered.
Thus, when one encounters a Raegh, one knows he stands across one of the most capable fighters in a Hold, ruthless enough to have crushed all opposition so that his assent was assured, or talented enough to defend himself against all comers, while simultaneously rising through the ranks. Unfortunately for the Dweghom race as a whole, and their neighbors, this process seldom encourages skills and virtues such as diplomacy, compromise and patience… To most Dweghom this is just as well, providing more chances to take the field of battle and earn more Aghm.

Box Contents
● 1 Resin Command Upgrade Miniature
● 1 Infantry Plastic Base

Product Information
● Assembly: Required.
● Box size: 3.7x7.4x10.4cm; 114grs
● Material: Resin
● Scale: 38mm, Miniature Height: 4cm

Lore
There are a few gifted Dweghom who reach a state of balance with their Element without formal Sorcerous training. Based on a scaled down design of the Hellbringer Cannons used to hunt the greatest of dragons, the Blast Cannons draw and shape the uncontrolled gift of their Dweghom users to generate powerful directional blasts of superheated flame capable of puncturing even the heaviest of plate at a hundred paces. The Ardent are organized around authoritative individual figures, who have been elected by their peers and subordinates to lead. These are almost universally powerful and popular warriors, whose exploits command the respect of their peers. While few hard-and-fast rules exist on the requirements and procedures of leadership amongst the Ardent, one thing is clear: to lead amongst the Ardent, one must not merely have undergone the Dheukorro, the Descent, but must fully embrace it as a way of life.
Exemplars of the Ardent creed, the Kerawegh have gone farther and deeper than any living Dweghom in the Dheukorro: they have reached the very gates of War’s Primordial prison. Refusing the dark call of that promethean threshold, the Kerawegh find in their devotion to kin and creed the strength to turn back to the surface. Acclaimed by their fellow Ardent, the respect they command among their fellows naturally pushes them into positions of leadership in their anarchic creed.
Mighty warriors in their own right, the Kerawegh are a terror on the field not for their skill at arms, but rather for their ability to channel the faith and fervor of their brethren into harsh battlefield miracles. These savage miracles they are capable of invoking are not taught as there is nothing that resembles a church or structured faith amongst the Kerawegh. They are gifts earned at the very end of their Descent, on the very threshold of Wars primordial prison.
Those few amongst the Kerawegh who care to speak of their new-found powers almost invariably describe how the clamor of war that all Dweghom hear throughout the Descent rises to a crescendo the closer one gets to War’s prison. Standing before the Gates, they are assailed with the din of a hundred concurrent battles despite being miles underground. The wisest amongst them suspect that these are the sounds of every battle and combat being fought on the surface, somehow echoing in the threshold of War’s demesne. But what all of them will agree upon is that some portion of their own soul or psyche is moved to respond to these brutal rhythms.
Upon their return, they find themselves so intricately attuned to the din and clamor of battle that they are somehow capable to project that dreadful power onto those around them. Their already impressive martial prowess is heightened by the song of war, making them an unstoppable force whether in offence or defense. Allies who heed their call are exhilarated by cadence of battle, each blow and cry granting them a reprieve or an opening they can exploit, while a Kerawegh’s foes hear only the screeching cries of breaking arms and the screams of the fallen, a discordant sound that saps their will to fight.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0663/4301/0534/collections/Conquest_Collection_Dweghom_c4380897-bcbb-4bc0-b146-2e8fbc6b6545.jpg?v=1716756606
